Brain Injury Info

Modern United States medicine's answer to stroke recovery is to avoid death. Once the patient is stable they are done.  Whatever damage has occurred to the brain is considered only healable to a certain extent.  This site is devoted to recovering the lost abilities of brain injury victims.  Many times this involves alternative therapies such as the ones discussed below.

Embryonic Stem Cell Therapy

There are many unregulated clinics that I have found that claim that they can heal many problems.  Dont be fooled!!!  This treatment can be dangerous if not done by the proper clinic.  After many hours of research I found NuTech Mediworld in New Delhi India.  Dr Geeta Shroff is the only doctor that I have found who uses Pluripotent Embrionic stem cells.  This is the only type of cell that has no rejection potential and no risk of future tumors.  Actually, what this doctor has explained through her research is that there is a reason why doctors in the US feel that embryonic stem cells have a risk for cancer...and that is because they are testing the cells in mice and rats who have a tendency to form tumors regardless!  When you take a human element such as a stem cell and inject it into a human, there will be no tumors.  It has been compared to a surrogacy in that when you implant an embryo in a surrogate, there is no chance for cancer as well!  Why would there be?

I have spent over 2 months at her clinic in India and have received treatment.  IT REALLY WORKS!!! In my most recent MRI, my brain showed healing of the visual fibers.  My visual field tests have also displayed an increase in my visual field that was not present before stem cell therapy.

Adult Stem Cell Therapy

Adult stem cells are claimed to be undifferentiated cells.  They are found throughout the body AFTER embryonic development, that multiply by cell division to replenish dying cells and regenerate damaged tissues. Also known as somaticstem cells (from Greek Σωματικóς, meaning of the body), they can be found in juvenile as well as adult animals and humans.

Scientific interest in adult stem cells has centred on their ability to divide or self-renew indefinitely, and generate all the cell types of the organ from which they originate, potentially regenerating the entire organ from a few cells. Unlike embryonic stem cells, the use of adult stem cells in research and therapy is not considered to be controversial as they are derived from adult tissue samples rather than destroyed human embryos. There are risks to this fact though that are discussed below.  They have mainly been studied in humans and model organisms such as mice and rats.

The problems that many clinics worldwide fail to acknowlege with adult stem cell therapy, is that these stem cells run a high risk of rejection in the body.  Immunosuppressant drugs might be required forever if these adult stem cells are rejected by the body.  Embryonic stem cells have no blueprint to life in them. They are the most undifferentiated cells that can be found to help heal brain injury.  ALSO, what I have found to be the case financially is that if you go to a clinic in Mexico, you can receive 3 days of adult stem cell treatment for $30K, but if you go to India for 3 weeks, you can receive EMBRYONIC stem cell treatment for almost half the cost and not have a fear of rejection.

NovaVision® Vision Restoration Therapy

NovaVision was developed to help the 2.2 million people in the US1 with neurological vision loss who may have been told vision loss due to stroke or brain injury was untreatable.  This therapy entails stimulus being presented on a computer screen for 30 minutes twice a day.  Everytime the eye picks up a stimulus, the mouse is clicked and the visual field is measured.  By presenting the stimulus in different segments of the eye, the idea is that this will stimulate neuronal activity, retraining the brain to "see" where it was once inactive as a result of a stroke or brain injury.

Hyperbaric Oxygen

Oxygen Therapy or HBOT, allows extra oxygen to be diffused or transported to the surrounding body tissues.  Thus, oxygen transport by plasma is significantly increased under hyperbaric therapy (HBOT).  Oxy Health is the company I used to purchase my own portable mild pressure chamber for at-home use.  When used in conjunction with stem cell therapy, the theory is that the pressurized oxygen will stimulate and mobilize the stem cells.

Acupuncture

Another mode of therapy that I chose to do about 6 months post stroke was acupuncture.  While the results weren't dramatic, studies show that when certain pressure points are addressed, it can increase blood flow to the brain and thus facilitate the healing process.
